Happy Gilmore returns to golf scene as Ball State commit

MUNCIE, Ind. (BVM) – It might not be the Tour Championship against Shooter McGavin, but Happy Gilmore will be making his way in front of golf spectators once again as a collegiate golfer.

A Bloomington South (Indiana) rising senior, Landon “Happy” Gilmore, announced his commitment to play golf at the college level for Ball State. While Gilmore doesn’t have a deep background in the sport of hockey, he does have one in golf, dating back to when he first developed the nickname of “Happy” at the age of 6.

Gilmore has made his way around the prep level in the state of Indiana for the past three years at Bloomington South High School, where he’s played since his freshman season. The rising senior golfer is currently ranked at No. 489 according to Golfweek’s rankings and enjoys a rating of 74.61.

After winning a regional tournament earlier this month, Gilmore would go on to tie for seventh place at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana for the Indiana high school boys state tournament. Following an even-par performance over 36 holes just a short while ago, the Panthers now-senior golfer announced his college decision over social media. Sharing that he would stay in-state with his choice, the Class of 2024 golfer will open his career at Ball State with his recent verbal commitment.

“I am very excited to announce that I have verbally committed to continue my academic and golf career at Ball State University,” Gilmore wrote on his social accounts. “I am very grateful for the opportunity Coach Fleck has given me! I would like to thank my family, my friends and coaches who push me everyday! Go Cards.”

With the classic “Happy Gilmore” film starring Adam Sandler coming out back in February of 1996, a chance for the name to return to the national scene over 27 years later will be set for a future date when the high school golfer makes his debut at the college level sometime in 2024.
