Lovejoy diver Maria Faoro strikes gold again

LUCAS, Texas — In February, Maria Faoro, a sophomore at Lovejoy High School, brought home the gold at the Texas State 5A Diving Championship in Austin. Not only did she win the championship two years in a row, but was once again chosen as the Athlete of the Meet and named to the All-America Diving and Academic List.

Because both of Maria’s parents were born in Brazil, she has dual citizenship. One of her big dreams has been to compete internationally. Her dream was realized when she was invited to compete in the Brazil National Championship as a member of the Rio21 team from Rio de Janeiro. The Rio21 team and head coach Renato Leite embraced the challenge of coaching Maria for this competition. It was the perfect match. Maria won the National Championship on both the 1- and 3-meter boards. Her outstanding performance qualified her to represent Brazil at the Junior Pan American Games in Lima, Peru in September.

Maria is also a member of the Dallas Metroplex Diving Club, where she is coached by 2016 American Conference silver medalist and former SMU diver, Dan Pitts. The USA Diving season has begun, and Maria has already become the Regional Champion on the 1 meter and runner-up on the 3 meter. These wins qualified her to move to the Zone Diving Championship, which was held in Florida at the end of June. Maria has also started college recruiting season, where she is able to meet with coaches across the country to explore opportunities within their programs.

Her feats outside of the natatorium are equally impressive. Maria is a Student Council Officer at Lovejoy High School and was inducted into the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society this past Spring. She is also entering her fifth year as an active member of the National Charity League – Frisco Chapter.

Maria’s family is very proud of her. We are all excited to continue following her journey and can’t wait to see what the future brings.
