Adams softball: Keeping their eyes on the ball and on the community

ROCHESTER, Mich. — Keeping your eye on the ball is an important part of softball. For the Adams Varsity softball team, they keep their eye on the ball, and on the community. Coach Francis Scislowicz has worked with the Rochester Adams softball team for 36 seasons. During the season he has two main goals for the team.

“We work on two big goals, serve the community and respect each other,” said Coach Fran. “Serving and respecting each other and the community is very important.”

From the end of March till the beginning of June the girls focus on working as a team and being the best players they can. This year they did very well, ending up 21–15 for the season. Leading the way was captain, senior Ella McDonald, who batted 565 for the season. “That is a new school record!” said Coach Fran.

The Adams softball team was very young this season with only one senior. The team came together and worked hard to compete at the highest level. Even though they did not win the championship, this team were champions of character all season long.

“This team truly has been such a blessing to be a part of. Every single girl has grit, dedication, compassion, and love for the game which makes the job as a captain so much more fun and rewarding,” said Ella McDonald. “Our team from day 1 had great chemistry on and off the field which made us stronger together and helped us get through games against tough teams, whether the outcome was a win or lose.”

Some of the team this year made All League and All District. Ella McDonald, Lilley Lutzka, Olivia Viazanko, and Tenley Boughner were All League. While Ella McDonald and Lilley Lutzka were All District.

During the off season the Adams softball team works to serve the community. In December the team volunteers as bell ringers to collect money for the Salvation Army.

“It’s great to get the team together to do such a good cause during the off season,” said Coach Fran. “We get our Santa hats on and spend time together in the cold, it’s just a great bonding experience.”

The team also has a clinic for third and fourth graders in the area. The team teaches the younger girls all the basics of softball. “Everyone has so much fun. We invite the young girls to come to a game we play. They get to come in the dugout with us and that is probably everyone’s favorite game!” laughed Coach Fran.

Not only do they have many outstanding softball players, but the coaches also teach them to be future leaders. “I want my grandchildren to look up to these girls and see them as role models.”

Lifetime memories were made on and off the field for the Adams Softball team. Hosting the Rochester Rangers for a very special practice. They donated their time and made blankets for the Fleece and Thank You organization!

“The Adams varsity softball team learned how to serve and have joy at each game and practice throughout the season,” said Coach Fran.
