The window for the Devils to compete for a title seemingly opened this past season after they reached the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs before falling to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games. It also appears Akira Schmid, who performed well in the playoffs, could step in and take the starting role from Vitek Vanecek, who started most of the games last season in the crease.

However, New Jersey could look to add Hellebuyck, who could guide Schmid for a year and help the Devils and newly signed forwards Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt back to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
