YORK, Pa. — Matt Hunter, men’s basketball head coach, York College of Pennsylvania, began his coaching career in 2005. He coached for The College of New Jersey and DeSales University before coming to York College of PA as head coach in 2012. A graduate of Salisbury University in Maryland, Matt said, “I have played and/or been around basketball my entire life,” including playing during high school at West Windsor Plainsboro high school in New Jersey. When speaking about athletics in general, Matt feels, “There are so many lessons to be learned from participating in (college) athletics. There is no greater educator out there. Perseverance, mental & physical toughness, relentlessness, how to be part of a team, communication, fighting through adversity, working through success, etc. For me, I think it is constantly striving to be your best, no matter what you are doing, no matter the circumstances surrounding you, you do everything you can to be your best.”

Under Matt’s leadership, York College Spartans men’s basketball team have posted some impressive seasons, including 2017 – 2018 Conference Championship, NCAA 2nd Round; 2018 – 2019 season lost in Conference Championship Game, NCAA 2nd Round; and 2019 – 2020 season Conference Championship, NCAA 2nd Round.

While reflecting on his coaching career so far, Matt said, “There are so many moments that are etched into my soul. You have on the floor moments – championships won, milestones reached or created that everyone sees and celebrates. But in reality more important to me are the graduations, former players’ weddings – those life moments! That is what makes coaching so special, you have the opportunity to truly connect with people and make an impact on their development as people. Win or lose we are constantly trying to focus on the process of pursuing excellence in all that we do. One day or game does not define who we are as players, people, coaches etc.. We are striving to be the best students, players, coaches, PEOPLE that we can be.”

Looking towards the future, Matt hopes, “I hope to make an impact on young men and their families’ lives! I hope that we can continue to connect with and create authentic relationships that last forever. That the Spartans’ coaching staff can work with guys that come in as 18 year olds and leave as 22 year olds ready to make a positive impact on their families, their friends, their communities, their occupations.”
