Bellbrook junior CJ Scohy carries on family golf tradition

BELLBROOK, Ohio — Incoming Bellbrook High School (BHS) junior CJ Scohy has been golfing since around age 3—almost since he could walk.

CJ golfs six or seven days per week and plays in 15-20 tournaments each year, throughout the Mar.-Nov. golf season. “We have a high school golf team simulator that helps keep his skills sharp through the winter months,” said Jeff Scohy, BHS head golf coach (who happens to be CJ’s dad). “There’s also a putting green in our basement.

“His favorite thing about golf is competing!” Jeff continued. “He just loves trying to win. Days that he’s not hitting his best are maddening, for sure. Golf is like that: One day you have it, and the next day you don’t.”

One true highlight for CJ was making birdie on the last hole to win the district tournament in 2022, thereby qualifying for state.

CJ was the SWBL (Southwestern Buckeye League) Player of the Year in 2022, as well as the High School Sectional and District Tournament Champion in fall 2022 (as a sophomore). He was also named 2022-23 Golfweek Junior Tour Player of the Year, for the 14-15 age group.

CJ recently qualified for the Ohio Amateur Championship, shooting an even Par 70 at NCR Country Club’s North Course. “That’s a great accomplishment; but it’s even sweeter, because I qualified, as well,” stated Jeff. The tournament was held Jul. 11-14, at Canterbury Golf Club in Beachwood, Ohio. Father and son relished the opportunity to play in the Ohio Amateur together, for the first time.

“As someone who plays all the time and still competes, I’m pretty sure I drove CJ’s love of the sport—just like my mom and dad did for me,” Jeff said. “We get to spend a lot of time together on the course, and it’s just a special bond that we share.” Jeff won the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association’s 114th Tony Blom Metropolitan Amateur Championship (Cincinnati’s annual amateur championship) in Jun. “I guess you could say golf runs deep in the family blood!”
