Sonora girls basketball: Reigning Freeway League champions
LA HABRA, Calif. — The Sonora Girls Varsity Basketball team have been the reigning Freeway League champions for the last three seasons. The Varsity team has had an impressive Freeway League campaign going 9-1 in 2021 and then going undefeated the last two seasons (21-22 and 22-23) for a league record of 20-0. The Lady Raiders ranked #5 in Orange County and were rated as the highest public school girls’ basketball program in the county. Senior point guard Larissa Robles was honored as the 2x Freeway League MVP – a historic accomplishment in Sonora girls’ basketball history.

For the 2023-2024 season, the Sonora Girls Basketball team is motivated to compete and win the Freeway League championship. The girls work extremely hard, training 6 days a week. They sacrifice numerous hours to reach their goals. Returning Senior team captain Kiana Graham will look to continue the tradition of Sonora Girls Basketball setting the tone for the team with her leadership and work ethic. Kiana has been a vital part of the team’s success as a tough defender and leading scorer. Sophomores Amiah Lewis and Lianna Hwang look to build upon their impressive freshmen year as they take on more responsibility for this year’s team.

The Sonora Girls Basketball program encourages all athletes to come out and participate. The program has three levels: Frosh-Soph, JV, and Varsity. As long as the athlete is willing to work hard and compete, there will be a spot for a player in the program. All girls’ basketball players go through rigorous pre-season training including weightlifting, conditioning, and skill work. The girls also work on life skills that help them to not only be successful on the court, but in the classroom, and life.
Pregame rituals include shootarounds, going to their favorite place to eat, and taking a nap. Big games require the “moneyball” to come out. Only those who are ready to play and win can touch the “moneyball.” The girls love to celebrate with locker room dances and Tiktoks.
