Catching up with Huntersville area volleyball coach Sandi Skidmore
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — High School Varsity Volleyball head coach Sandi Skidmore has been coaching for over 30 years. She has coached at North Mecklenburg High School for 12 years, Hough High School for 13 years as well as the LKN Volleyball Club and Huntersville Parks and Recreation for over 20 years. This lengthy career means that Coach Skidmore is a staple in the area’s athletic community.
Sandi started playing volleyball in middle school and continued through high school, into college at Lenoir Rhyme and throughout her adult life. “I’ve played sand doubles, grass doubles, camps and clinics. I’m proud to say I have also coached alongside some of the best coaches in the Charlotte area.”
Throughout her extensive career, Coach Skidmore has an impressive record. 303 – 63 in her career, a 163-10 conference record with nine undefeated conference seasons, two regional championships and one appearance in the State Finals. But for Sandi, winning isn’t everything.
“The most important part for me is teaching my athletes how to talk, trust their teammates and not be afraid to make a mistake. Some of my proudest moments are when I see a player finally get it and watch the lightbulb go off.” Sandi works with each of her athletes to help them develop as a whole person by instilling life lessons such as mental toughness, time management, patience and commitment. “They are always learning and growing.”
Coach Skidmore has been able to watch so many of the area athletes do just that, learn and grow. “Having the opportunity to work with Huntersville Parks and Recreation and their volleyball camps, I have seen many of these young ladies go on to play in recreational leagues, middle school, high school, college and beyond. Some come back to help with those same camps they started in. Both of my assistant coaches are former players of mine. The camps are where it all starts and I am proud to say that I could be a part of that and help these amazing ladies develop a love for the game.”
