TDs, taxpayers: Texas’ 5 most expensive HS football stadiums

No. 3 – McKinney ISD Stadium

Cost: $70 million
Opened: 2018
Location: McKinney, Texas
Capacity: 12,000

The majority of the funds for the McKinney Stadium came from property taxes. In 2016, about 62% of McKinney voters approved the $220 million bond package. The package included funds to build the new McKinney ISD Stadium that would replace the 54-year-old, 7,000-seat Ron Poe Stadium that was the district’s primary venue.

“There is a little bit of an arms race,” said Rodney Webb, president of the Texas High School Football Coaches Association (via Dallas News). “Somebody has something, the next district over feels like they’ve got to have as much or better.”

McKinney ISD’s facility is about six miles from Allen’s $60 million stadium.

“If you could have seen the looks on those kids’ faces as they ran out for the very first time – that is why we built this facility,” said Rick McDaniel, McKinney ISD superintendent (via Dallas News). “We’re not in competition with some other district around us. We’re simply here to provide first-class facilities.”

McKinney ISD Stadium is home to the following football programs:

Boyd (McKinney): 2-8 overall in 2022
McKinney: 8-5 overall in 2022
McKinney North (McKinney): 7-4 overall in 2022
