Kearney area boxers: Focusing on their success

KEARNEY, Mo. — Boxing success is not always measured in wins and losses. Success comes from many things like weight loss, confidence building and self-growth. Like Rocky said, “It’s not about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you get hit and keep moving forward.” Boxing imitates life. It will teach you things about yourself that you didn’t know.

Dakota Hylton lost over 125lbs in their cardio boxing classes! We didn’t waste any time and got him a match in St. Joe. It did not go well. He had some outside distractions that caused him to lack focus and he froze up. His opponent came at him very fast and hard and Dakota honestly didn’t put up much of a defense. He was blown out in 30 seconds of the first round!

This is how boxing imitates life because some things that you can’t control in life will distract you and you will have to ignore the noise and stay professional to get the job done.

Two days later an opportunity presented itself for a fight in Omaha. Dakota didn’t hesitate, he accepted the fight right away and I agreed, we had to get the nasty taste of defeat out of his mouth.

We went up there and he fought the best I’ve seen so far. He dictated the pace, fought from range and returned fire. He gave his opponent an 8-count in the 2nd round and honestly, the fight could have been stopped. He dominated the entire fight! To come back from getting blown out in the first to dominating the next week shows determination against fortitude.

This can be a pivotal moment in a person’s life. The lessons taught through defeat and triumph mean far more than the trophy he brought home, and that can’t happen without the defeat. Embrace the defeat!

Congratulations Dakota! Keep doing you, it’s worked so far.

Mackenzie Hatfield, another boxer, trains more than anyone, I can count on her to be here everyday. Her mom has been with her from the start, she is her biggest cheerleader and supporter.

At first she would come in and read books, she didn’t understand why anyone would want to box, but after about 3 months she decided she wanted to see what all the fun was about. Now she is a coach and holding mitts! She works her daughter’s corner during fights and is still with her all the way. They are both bonding and getting in shape at the same time. Kenzie is doing great with a record at 5-2 and has lost 30lbs! Congratulations ladies!!

Jason Ross is a Kearney resident and I commend him for the hard work he has put in to accomplishing his goals. Jason has been developing a healthy, portion controlled diet, and he has been taking the cardio class 2-3 times a week. He has lost 70 POUNDS! No longer pre diabetic! No longer has high blood pressure! Has more energy and sleeps better!

Please join me in congratulating Jason on accomplishing his goals! It is all credit to his hard work and dedication.

Congratulations to all the members on their successes and we look forward to seeing what you will accomplish in the future!
