Every ACC football program’s best season of all time
North Carolina: 1997
Another team on this list without an ACC title, North Carolina’s 1997 squad barely edges out the likes of the 1967 and 1980 teams based on how competitive they were. During the year, the Tar Heels went 11-1, tied for the most wins in program history, outscoring opponents 348-146.
The only blemish on the team’s season was a 20-3 loss to No. 3 Florida State at home in November, which ended up costing North Carolina the ACC title. However, despite the loss, the Tar Heels recovered by ending the season with three straight wins including a decisive 42-3 victory over Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl.
