Spencer Barnett stuns social media with 59-yard field goal

AUSTIN, Texas (BVM) – Stunning plays at the high school level are nothing new as top athletes can impress with incredible statistics and feats of strength. That is exactly what Westlake High School kicker Spencer Barnett showed last Friday when he hit a 59-yard field goal to help his Chaparrals win 31-21 in their season opener.

While the kicker did miss a field goal earlier in the game, that was quickly forgotten when he hit the near record-breaking kick in the fourth quarter. That put the cap on his day as he finished the contest 4-for-4 on PATs and 1-for-2 on field goals. Though his field goal didn’t break any Texas high school football records, it did remind Westlake fans of another Chaparrals’ kicker – NFL star Justin Tucker.

Barnett excels in all facets of the kicking game. Last season, Barnett was 5-for-6 on field goals with a 49-yard long as well as 2-for-2 on PATs as a kicker while punting the ball six times for 242 yards (a 40.3-yard average) with a 52-yard long and one inside the 20-yard line as well as kicking 25 touchbacks on 81 kickoffs. This success has earned Barnett attention from scouts too as the renowned Kohl’s Kicking Camp ranks the senior as a five-star prospect as the No. 19 punter and No. 50 kicker in the class.

A member of the 2024 class, Barnett currently doesn’t hold any offers according to his social media, but he has made numerous visits to D-I programs. Among his visits were trips to Boston College, Houston and Oklahoma.

With a penchant for long field goals, Barnett will likely not be done making waves on social media, especially given that he plays for the same program the NFL’s best kicker once did. If Barnett is able to continue his upward trajectory expect fan bases across the country to be clamoring for perhaps the greatest special teams weapon in the country.
