Viral: Massive junior OL Byron Washington draws D-I offers

DESOTO, Texas (BVM) – As the saying goes, “Everything is bigger in Texas,” and that is especially the case with DeSoto High School offensive lineman Byron Washington. The left tackle is a whopping 6-foot-8 and 360 pounds and, perhaps most surprisingly, is only a junior.

Unsurprisingly, Washington’s size has drawn plenty of attention in the state and elsewhere. He was even featured by national high school sports site MaxPreps on their social media pages,

Washington is reminiscent of a fellow Texas high school football player, Brione Ramsey-Brooks, a current TCU offensive lineman who played at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas. Brooks also went viral following the release of his height and weight as the 6-foot-5, 455-pound freshman stunned many.

As of Tuesday, Washington is unranked by national recruiting sites, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t received attention. The offensive tackle has earned seven D-I offers to date from Arizona State, Grambling State, Oregon, TCU, Texas, Texas Southern and UNLV. Most of these stemmed from a camp at TCU after which the lineman earned five new offers.

On film, Washington shows a player who can simply dominate due to not only his size but strength and athleticism as well. A common phrase in football is, “You can’t teach size,” and Washington has that in spades with an impressive reach that helps him keep opposing defenders at bay.

Given DeSoto’s top-25 ranking nationally and the fact the squad is loaded with D-I level talent, expect Washington to continue to rack up offers. With the Eagles currently sitting at 2-0 and looking to repeat as state champions, expect Washington to play a major role in his team’s quest for back-to-back state titles.
