FAIRHOPE, Ala. (BVM) — It’s been well documented that former Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers is now coaching high school football, but now one of his sons is shining bright under his tutelage. Gunner, one of Rivers’ 10 kids, is starring at St. Michael Catholic in Alabama.

Gunner is a freshman and through five games on the season, he has 1,482 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and two interceptions. His passing yard mark ranks second in the state.

Philip was asked about his son in an interview with Ben Thomas of Alabama.com prior to the season and the elder Rivers prioritized patience with the young QB.

“He’s getting better. He’s a freshman,” Rivers told Thomas. “We all have to remind ourselves every day that he’s in ninth grade, but he’s doing some good things. This (7-on-7 football) has been good for him — just getting reps and seeing a bunch of different stuff. You get more comfortable with every rep and every call you hear and make.”

Gunner, who also wears No. 17,  looks like a veteran despite his lack of experience as he is quickly emerging as one of the best freshman signal callers in the southeast. And in some ways, he’s a bit more advanced than his dad was at the same age.

“He’s a little more even-keeled, which will bode well for him,” Rivers said.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound QB in the class of 2027 has no college offers yet according to 247 Sports, but if he can keep up his play, they should start flowing in. Maybe even one from his father’s alma mater, NC State.
