Buena football: Bring it on
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — Fall is here! School is in session and Buena High School Football is alive and well. The Buena Football Team had had a productive summer training session and the result has shown these first two weeks of the regular season. Coach Thomas has gathered a great coaching staff that is focused on not only getting to the palyoffs, but being home a state Championship to this great city. One big addition to the staff is assistant head Coach Determan, who was acquire from Benson High School, where he was the head Coach.
Coach Thomas is building a successful program and fostering a positive and supportive environment for all out student-athletes. The season opener was an eye opener where our Colts gave fans a thrilling home opener defeating the Betty H. Fairfax Stampede in a convincing fashion by shutting out the opponent 40-0. the Second win came when the Colts traveled to Ironwood Ridge High School and played in the rain and mud in a grudge match that tested the Colts Defensive line and their will to win. At the end of the second quarter the Colts started believing and executing plays and eventually pulled out the 35-20 win.
Even though it was a convincing win, Coach Thomas was concerned about getting his players to play through the whistle, decrease the penalties on both sides of the ball and staying focused for 4 quarters. The Colts impressed the coaching staff by swarming the ball on defense/offense and consistent ball movement up and down the field. as the fans packed the stadium, another highlight of the season opener was the new state of the art scoreboard. With upgraded audio/visual equipment and a new weight room, Coach Thomas believes that these added features will contribute to the success of the program.
This season Coach Thomas is focusing on laying the foundation for success and we think that success is coming sooner rather than later. With two convincing wins, solid coaching staff, supportive community, they are building Buena Football Brick by Brick, focusing on developing a positive culture where players feel empowered to not survive but to achieve and thrive. Coach Thomas is focusing on TEAM, rather than the ME, to ensure a year long tight-knit program. It is very evident from summer workouts, coach Thomas continuing to push his players to be better student athletes. There is a Championship on the horizon and the Buena Colts Stampede is moving toward it.
