MLB Hall of Famers who went from millionaires to bankruptcy
Rollie Fingers
Rollie Fingers, who played for 17 seasons in the MLB, was earning over $1 million towards the end of his career in 1985. Four years later, in 1989, Fingers filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
The 1992 Baseball Hall of Famer went bankrupt due to bad spending and investments – which included real estate, wind turbines and Arabian horses he bought for $225,000, according to the Chicago Tribune. Fingers’ then-wife, Suzy, estimated that her husband lost $4.5 million to creditors.
To pay off debts, Fingers “sold his 5,000 square-foot house in El Cajon, his cars, his condominium in Palm Springs, his 120 acres of land in Arizona, his 10-acre pistachio orchard in Madera and investments in Hawaiian timeshares, wind turbines and Arabian horses,” as reported by the Los Angeles Times. He also took a desk job that paid him less than $50,000 a year.
