Champion of field and family: Meet Durango athlete Cole Pontine

DURANGO, Colo. — Cole Pontine is a junior at Durango High School, a football player, a wrestler, and a devoted younger brother. Only seventeen as of October 24th, he is also a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

His journey in the world of sports began in first grade with flag football. From second to sixth grade, Cole embraced the field as he played in the Youth American Football League. In fourth grade, his team secured victory in the Super Bowl, an accomplishment earned through an undefeated season. The only challenge they faced was the Farmington Titans, who managed to defeat them three times in those five years. The influence of his father, a former football player, and a coach during that time, undoubtedly played a role in shaping Cole’s love for the game.

Cole’s athletic prowess extends beyond the football field. He dedicated five years to Little League baseball and commenced his wrestling journey at a mere five years of age. In his eighth-grade year, he even dabbled in track and field. Moving on to high school, Cole displayed his talent on the junior varsity team during his freshman year. The subsequent year, he made an impressive leap, participating in both JV and varsity football while excelling in varsity wrestling.

However, his path hasn’t been without obstacles. In April 2022, a wrestling match resulted in a dislocated and broken elbow, requiring three surgeries. Despite this setback, he has remained resilient and determined to return to both the field and the mat. This year, during a practice session before the first game of the season, Cole suffered a Clavicle Growth Plate fracture, sidelining him for five weeks. Undeterred, Cole eagerly anticipated being cleared to return to play after five weeks of recovery time.

Beyond sports, Cole is a loving and caring “big” little brother to Kylee, who is 18. Kylee suffered a severe traumatic brain injury from a horse accident in July 2021, and Cole has been a devoted pillar of support during her recovery. Throughout his journey, Cole has faced adversities with dignity and courage. His resilience and dedication demonstrate his remarkable character and commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
