Middletown boys basketball starts season strong
MIDDLETOWN, Md. — As fall sports come to an end at Middletown High School, they are warming up their gym to winter sports. The MHS basketball team has just started their season with high hopes and high hoops.
MHS shooting guard Audric Melbouci said, “I expect great things for this upcoming season. We have a great team, with awesome guys all over the floor. We expect to win a lot of games this year, hopefully.”
Brett Lucas, MHS wide and forward, gave introspection on their daily practice. “We typically get loose with a few warm-up drills, then mostly scrimmaging, whether it’s working on new sets and plays, different lineups together, or focusing on defensive stops and rotations. Once we get into the season, the end of practice is typically reviewing our next opponent’s sets and plays, along with adjusting or adding to our own.”
The team started off strong; their first game of the season was a win against Tuscarora High School.
Lucas said, “The first game was not bad; it is always good to start the season off with a win. We found some things we can work on and handle better, along with getting more of a chance to get together and getting more comfortable as a team.”
The players shared some of their favorite things about playing for MHS.
Point guard Matt Kelsey said, “I love all the relationships that I have with the coaches and all my teammates I’ve had at Middletown.”
Small forward Gabe Cottrell said, “My favorite part of playing for Middletown is the strong sense of community and the support from the parents, students, and fans. It makes playing basketball so much more fun.”
“The culture and relationships. I’ve played with a lot of my teammates for many years and have developed close friendships with a lot of teammates,” Lucas said.
With high spirits within the team this season, they plan to make it all the way to States.
“The rest of Maryland has to watch out. Middletown is coming for that state ring,” Cottrell said.
