Randel, Fotheringham Honored With D2CCA Awards

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – As the CMU women’s soccer team’s NCAA Tournament postseason run continues, two Mavericks were honored Tuesday for their contributions up to this point with selections to the D2CCA All-South Central Region teams. Forward Sauvelyne Randel earned a First Team All-Region selection while midfielder Abby Fotheringham snagged a spot on the Second Team. Randel and Fotheringham were both previously named First-Team All-RMAC in 2023 and can now add the first All-Region honors of their respective careers to their resumes. It marks the third consecutive year that the Mavericks have placed multiple players on the All-Region team, after Lila Dere and Michaela Dangler each earned first-team nods in 2021 and Dere and Haley Klasner made the first team in 2022, with Dere winning Region Player of the Year honors. Prior to this three-year streak, a CMU player hadn’t earned a D2CCA All-Region selection since the 2011 season. Sauvelyne Randel becomes the seventh D2CCA First Team All-Region player in CMU women’s soccer history, having scored 15 goals and six assists through 21 matches in the 2023 season. The redshirt junior ranks second in the RMAC in goals (15) and is tied for the conference lead in points (36). Randel’s seven game-winning goals this season not only lead the RMAC but are also the most in a single season in program history, passing Dere’s 2022 total of six. Two of those game-winning goals came in each of the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, as Randel provided all the offense in CMU’s 1-0 wins over Texas Woman’s and Colorado School of Mines. Abby Fotheringham burst onto the scene in her debut season for the Mavericks, scoring five goals and four assists while playing in every match and starting all but one for CMU. A persistent offensive threat, Fotheringham ranks second in the RMAC in shots on goal (32) and seventh in overall shots (56). The junior winger scored a dramatic 89th-minute game winning goal against UCCS, who the Mavs play again this Saturday for the South Central regional championship. The D2CCA All-Region teams are nominated and selected by the region’s sports information directors. A total of 26 players are honored in each of Division II’s eight regions via a 13-player First Team and 13-player Second Team. Each team consists of four forwards, four midfielders, four defenders and one goalkeeper. The D2CCA encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of high education. The D2CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact NCAA Division II athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities. Colorado Mesa continues its 2023 season at home, as Grand Junction will play host to the next two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Mavs will face UCCS in the third round and South Central Regional championship this Thursday at 5 p.m., with another NCAA third round match between Point Loma and Seattle Pacific taking place at 2 p.m. Thursday. The winners of Thursday’s matches will face off in an NCAA national quarterfinal on Saturday at 4 p.m., also in Grand Junction. Matches can be streamed online for free and tickets are available at cmumavericks.com/tickets.
