Viera volleyball player Izzy Starck named BSN Overall Player of the Year
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Viera senior Izzy Starck joined former Hawk standouts Delaney Lott and Mak Carter and was named the 2023 Brevard Sports Network and Beach Wave Volleyball Club Player of the Year.
Starck, who transferred to Viera from Colorado last summer had one of the best high school seasons seen on Brevard courts in recent years.
Starck, who arrived as a high profile student athlete met and exceeded the expectations that traveled with her.
Ranked as the top player in the country at one point this past season by PrepDig.com, Starck left many spectators in gyms around the state, and BSN broadcast crews with many unforgettable jaw dropping moments.
The Viera senior, who is committed to Big10 volleyball power Penn State, finished the season as the leader in kills in the county with 434 finishers.
She was second on the Hawks in assists (414), digs (354), aces (52) and blocks (27). To be first or second in every statistical category that matters most in the sport on a team as good as Viera is quite an outstanding accomplishment.
Starck helped lead Viera back to the Class 6A state championship match, where the team finished as state runner-up to St. Thomas
While the state championship eluded the Hawks, Viera ended the 2023 season with a program record 27 wins and they repeated as Cape Coast Conference Champions and captured their third straight district and regional championship.
Izzy and the Hawks excelled facing some of the best competition in the state and the country for that matter this season.
Despite falling to St. Thomas in the state championship, Viera finished the season ranked higher than the Raiders in MaxPreps final poll as Viera was No.7 overall in the state and still No.1 in 6A.
The Hawks went 9-1 during the regular season against teams that reached the final four or better in their respective state including 3-0 vs. two teams that reached the FHSAA Final Four and 4-0 vs Westminster Christian, Barron Collier, Bishop Moore and Winter Park all teams who finished as state runners-up this season.
The Hawks were 2-1 vs. state champs losing to FHSAA 3A title winner Carrollwood Day but they defeated Georgia’s 3A state champ and Pennsylvania’s 4A state champ in straight sets in a tournament during the early part of the season.
Starck signed her letter of intent back on December 2 and will be an early enrollee at Penn State on January 6. Izzy will play setter in college where she will join her sister Anjelina Starck on the Happy Valley campus.
Anjelina will be a senior next season at Penn State and the two will look to recapture the magic and play that helped them win a high school state championship playing together when Izzy was a freshman at Rampart High in Colorado.
Aside from being named the BSN Player of the Year today, last week, Starck was named Miss Volleyball for 2023 by Florida Dairy Farmers.
Starck was also named to the Under Armour All-American team earlier this season and along with 27 other top high school volleyball players from around the country will compete on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at The Venue at UCF in Orlando in the UA All-American Game. Izzy will play for Team Ice and you can watch the game on ESPN U.
Izzy has had quite a prep volleyball career and aside from everything she earned and accomplished this past season Starck has also captured honors such as 2022 Indoor USA U19 Women’s National Training Team Member, MVP Under Armour Camp, Kansas (2022), 2022 Colorado Gatorade and MaxPreps Player of the Year, Colorado 5A All-State 1st Team (Fall 2021), 2021 Colorado 5A State Champions, Gazette Preps 5A/4A Girls’ Volleyball All-Star 1st Team (Spring 2021), Rampart High School Volleyball Varsity MVP (Spring 2021, Fall 2021)
Congratulations Izzy on a terrific season and career and good luck at Penn State.
