Centerville boys basketball program continues legacy of grit, strength
(L to R): Eli Greenberg, Baboucarr Njie, Jonathan Powell, Andrew Crompton, Carter Gerhardstein, Cohen Ellis and Ethan Greenberg. As part of our annual retreat, each player chops down a dead tree. The process of chopping down a tree is central to the mentality of our program. It will never come down in one swing. It’s the faithful, consistent swings that, when added up, result in the tree’s falling. Such is progress in any area of our lives. (Courtesy: Brook Cupps)

Centerville boys basketball program continues legacy of grit, strength

DAYTON, Ohio — The Centerville High School varsity boys’ basketball schedule is a tough one again this year. We always attempt to play the most competitive schedule possible and always look forward to playing some of the best teams in the country. We’re grateful for the work of previous teams, to allow this group to continue playing such a challenging schedule.

Babouccar Njie is the third brother in his family to go through our program. Babouccar is a senior and will be a pivotal part of this year’s team. His oldest brother, Mo, is now a center at Southern Methodist University, while the middle brother, Kebba, is a center at University of Notre Dame. A much different player than his two brothers, Babouccar is looking to forge his own path this season as a leader for our team.

We expect our players to live by and grow in our team core values: tough, passionate, unified and thankful. Tough revolves around approaching each opportunity and challenge with positive body language. Passionate means that we choose to do more than expected about things we are committed to. Unified is the willingness to communicate and act with urgency, understanding that our time together as a team is limited, so we want to maximize it. Thankful means that we want to express our appreciation and gratitude for all that we have to be grateful for.

What I love about coaching is the opportunity to have a true long-term impact on people. Talking to people in the business world, I realize even more how fortunate I am to have the opportunity every day to impact someone’s life.
