Get ready for Rumson-Fair Haven rowing team’s ERG Challenge 2024
RUMSON, N.J. — The Rumson-Fair Haven High School Rowing Team will once again host their annual Erg Challenge on Sunday, January 7, 2024 from 8 am – 1 pm in the Rumson-Fair Haven High School Cafeteria. The event aims to raise funds to replace the team’s boats and equipment, increase awareness of the sport and promote team spirit.
Last year’s Erg Challenge raised over $12,000 and had over 90 participants comprised of middle school students, HS students from several schools and adults, all who competed on erg machines as teams and/or individuals. It was a fun event with more than 100 spectators cheering them on.
The Erg Challenge is open to ages 11 and older. Single events include the masters/adults and high school students rowing 2K/2000m and middle school rowing 1K/1000m races. The 4-person 2000m relay race is open to all ages. Registration can be accessed through our website, www.rfhrowing.org. First Responders and RFH High School students can register at no cost.
Founded in 2007, RFH Rowing is an intense, time-demanding four-season sport, which competes in the Fall and Spring seasons. The team is funded by athlete fees and by The Rumson Boat Race, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, devoted to promoting the culture of rowing in the Rumson-Fair Haven communities. Our athletes have been recruited to over 30 exceptional university rowing teams including Princeton, MIT, Drexel, Bucknell, University of Pennsylvania, Miami University, Indiana, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Iona, Lafayette, Loyola, Ithaca College, St. Lawrence, and LaSalle College.
The continued competitive success of the RFH Rowing Team is dependent upon the replacement of equipment. One boat costs over $30k and all equipment needs to be replaced every 7-8 years. Indoor row training is by “erg” (stationary rowing machines) running $1000 each. The Rumson Boat Race is a non-profit organization that is funded by private donations, corporate sponsorships and individual athlete fees.
