Tevin Griffey, son of Ken Griffey Jr., joins Boise State
BOISE, Idaho (BVM) – The Boise State Broncos football program hit a home run with its most recent transfer addition. On Thursday, the Broncos announced the addition of redshirt senior Tevin Griffey from Florida A&M.

The defensive back is the son of Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., but his true love is for football.
“Tevin, he loves football,” Ken said in a 2016 New York Times interview. “I got him in the batting cages a couple of days ago. He thought that was fun, but he doesn’t want to go out there and take fly balls. He’d rather hit somebody and run the football and score touchdowns.”
Tevin has found some success on the gridiron as well. Coming out of Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, Tevin was ranked a three-star recruit by 247Sports. The defensive back committed to Florida A&M over Michigan and Toledo, each of which offered him scholarships.

The youngest Griffey found success with the Rattlers. He played in 23 games, recording 24 tackles, half a tackle for loss, a blocked kick, a pass deflection and an interception which he returned for a touchdown. This past season was the most productive for Tevin as he recorded 13 total tackles, the blocked kick and his first career interception during Florida A&M’s 12-1 SWAC championship campaign.

Father and son were also able to share a unique experience during the Rattlers’ homecoming game. Ken, who doubles as a sports photographer, spent the game on the Florida A&M sidelines, taking pictures of the action.

While Tevin is certainly athletic in his own right, athleticism runs through all the branches of the Griffey family tree. Tevin’s great-grandfather, Buddy, earned a football scholarship to Kentucky State in the 1940s. His grandfather, Ken Griffey Sr., played 19 seasons in the MLB, though he admitted football was his true passion.
Meanwhile, Tevin’s siblings also had D-I careers. His older brother, Trey, spent five years on the Arizona Wildcats football team before a brief three-year stint in the NFL. His older sister, Taryn, spent two seasons on Arizona’s women’s basketball team before medically retiring.
Now it’s Tevin’s turn to show off his D-I skills. Coming off of his best collegiate season and with a couple of years of eligibility left thanks to the COVID-19 waiver, Tevin will have time to prove to the Broncos faithful that the Griffey name can be dynamic on the gridiron as it is on the baseball diamond.
