Meet Emma Carpenter: From Gopher Golfer to Play-by-Play Announcer

Emma Carpenter is a Gopher golfer and play-by-play announcer She is a 5th year senior member of the women’s golf team at the University of Minnesota Carpenter is a journalism major and is completing a graduate degree in marketing at Carlson She started playing golf around age 12 and committed to the Gophers after her sophomore year of high school Carpenter has been involved in various broadcasting opportunities, including play-by-play for Gopher volleyball, women’s basketball, and men’s basketball on B1G+ She is a regular contributor on the 5 Clubs Podcast and works for Gopher Digital Productions, where she has done sideline reporting for softball and sung the national anthem at Gopher sporting events Carpenter received the 2023 Lisa Byington Award from BTN, which is a major achievement in her desired career of sports broadcasting She aspires to pursue a career in play-by-play and has utilized Lisa Byington as a mentor Carpenter spends 20+ hours preparing for a game and is dedicated to knowing every player on both teams, their background, and recent performance She is poised to finish her spring season of golf, complete her master's degree, and pursue a career in the broadcast industry Carpenter's story highlights the impact of NIL on student-athletes' career opportunities and the challenges faced in pursuing careers in sports broadcasting
