10 agonizing ways NFL champions lost their Super Bowl rings
An angry Patriots fan stole 27 Giants Super Bowl rings
After the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII (2008), Patriots fan Sean Murphy plotted to steal the championship rings as revenge.
Murphy was aware that the rings were being manufactured by E.A. Dion Inc., a family-owned jeweler in Massachusetts. So, he and an accomplice cut a hole in the roof of the jewelry store and stole $2 million worth of gold, jewelry and over two dozen Super Bowl rings. Murphy saw Super Bowl rings engraved with “Strahan” and “Manning,” according to Bloomberg.
Murphy was caught and sentenced to prison; he gave his girlfriend one of the Super Bowl rings and a friend blabbed to the FBI since she wasn’t happy that she didn’t receive one herself, according to the NY Post.
On this day in 2008, Sean Murphy and some accomplices stole 27 Super Bowl rings. His motive? Sean, apparently a Patriots fan, didn’t feel like their competitor and Super Bowl XLII champs, the Giants, deserved the win. Or the rings. #superbowl #crime #crimetime #dumbcrime #robbery pic.twitter.com/CIEjrDCw8p
