Chatting up the Middletown HS wrestling team

MIDDLETOWN, Md. — Playing six matches a week, training, learning different moves, making memories, and bringing down their opponents with just one sweep, Middletown High School’s wrestling team gave an inside look on this year’s season.

Matthew Cioffi said, “The season is going very well. Currently, we are ranked ninth in the State, which is awesome. I see us only going up from there, and definitely have a good shot at winning States.”

Having six matches a week, the boys try to fit as much practice and training as they can.

Kashton Dalhouse said, “We warm up with hand fighting and hand stands, then go on to learn drill moves. We also wrestle live at a fast pace, with very little break time, as practice is only an hour and 40 minutes.

“Outside of our matches, our couch encourages all of us to go to the gym on our own to get stronger, and also to do some kinds of cardio workout,” Alex Hoy added.

Each player gave a description of the signature move they like to use most on their opponents.

Hoy said, “The move I use the most is called a sweep single. The move is from the neutral position and you sweep around to grab an opponent’s leg from the side and trip them to the mat.”

Dalhouse said he also uses the single sweep in neutral where both players start on their feet.

“I use what’s called a mixer,” Cioffi said. “That’s when you club the back of their head and snap them down to the mat. You then throw your other arm behind their back and flip them over while using your weight to keep their shoulders on the mat for the pin.”

In addition to the hard work on the mat, the wrestlers have made incredible memories made off the mat playing for MHS.

“We have an extraordinary coaching staff. They push us to get better everyday, both in the sport and outside the sport,” Hoy said.

“What I enjoy most about wrestling for Middletown would definitely have to be the coaches. I almost didn’t want to wrestle again this year, but we have the best coaches in the world who honestly feel like friends more than coaches,” Cioffi said.
