Kearney girls wrestling prepares for state tournament
KEARNEY, Mo. — As the Kearney girls’ varsity wrestling season is ending, it’s important to remember how hard they have worked to reach where they are. This season has been a testament to the efforts of each of these athletes. They never let doubt or worry interfere with their success. Bailey Martin, Riley Walker, Ella Herndon, and Carli Vargas have qualified for the state, which is quite an impressive achievement. Beyond the victories, this team is truly set apart from others with their unwavering support for each other.
The girls constantly cheer each other on and encourage each other to improve on and off the mat. They foster a sense of family that transcends beyond the losses and victories. The girls always have each other’s back. The unwavering support for each other undoubtedly strengthens the bonds the girls share.
Among the stars of the mat is Savannah McDowell. For Savannah, wrestling is more than a sport; it’s a personal challenge, a journey of self-discovery where the individual faces not just an opponent but their own limits.
“I love the ability to prove something to yourself; wrestling in the picture is an individual sport; it’s you against another. You find what you’re made of when you are facing another ready to fight,” Savannah says.
Last year, the girls were triumphant in bringing home a state championship. This undoubtedly left a lasting mark on the team. This year, the determination for a repeat victory fuels them. The girls’ hard work and persistence are the driving force behind the team’s repeated victories that have led them this far.
