Liberty North girls soccer team goes back to back

LIBERTY, Mo. — Liberty North’s girls’ soccer team is coming off a historic season last year. LN went undefeated, going 22-0 under the coaching of Steve Person. Steve was named the 2022-2023 National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Section 5 Coach of the Year. This year, in the 2023-2024 season, LN will have a new head coach, Katy Lindsey. Katy was named the Class 4 assistant coach of the year. With Katy stepping in at the head coach position, LN could be on their way to another class 4 state title. LN went 13-0 at home and 9-0 at away games. LN also outscored their opponents 85 to 12.

Lauren Wood is a great player on this very talented girls’ team. Lauren Wood is expected to have an outstanding year. When asked what personal goals she would like to accomplish this year, Wood responds: “Some personal goals I have are scoring more goals and also just staying more composed.” She was also asked what she is most excited about for this upcoming season: “I am most excited to play with the girls that are returning. I’m also excited about working with the new girls coming in. I’m excited to lead this new team as a senior.” Lauren was asked about her thoughts on the new head coach Katy Lindsey: “I’m super excited to have coach Lindsey as the head coach this year. She has been very on top of everything to make it not stressful.”

Katy Lindsey, the upcoming head coach for LN girls, was asked what some of her expectations are for this season: “The expectations I have for the season are just to compete with every team we play. We have set team goals for the year, so helping my players reach those goals, but also pushing them to reach the goals they set individually and as a team.

Having played soccer herself since she was in the first grade, Katy jumped at the chance to become an assistant coach. She comments on her experience when becoming an assistant coach: “I actually became an assistant on a chance. I was working summer school in 2019 at SVMS (South Valley Middle School) when Coach Person asked me if I would be interested in coaching. I thought it would be a good challenge. I knew I would be able to learn a lot from Coach Person, but also knew that I could bring things to the table to help the program. I think being awarded assistant coach of the year just validated all of the things that I knew were important in having a successful program, and all the things that I implemented when being an assistant was impactful. I think the mentorship from Coach Person, along with being true to myself and the things I believe in as a coach, prepared me to be the new head coach.”

Liberty North wishes their soccer team the best of luck and hopes to win another Class 4 state championship!
