Balancing acts: The rise of Westfield High School gymnastics

WESTFIELD, Ind. — In the world of gymnastics, balance isn’t just about staying upright on the beam; it’s about juggling the demands of school, athletics, and personal life. For the Westfield High School gymnastics team, mastering this metaphorical balance has been just as crucial as nailing a flawless routine on the floor or vault. As they wrap up their second year of existence, the team has not only shattered records but also demonstrated an impressive mastery of equilibrium both on and off the mat.

Practicing diligently at Wright’s 360 Movement Academy, the Westfield High School gymnastics team has swiftly made its mark on the local circuit. This season, they achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new school record with a team score of 101.60 against Columbus East High School. Leading the charge is senior Elianna Reynolds, both the team captain and its highest scorer. Reynolds, whose commitment to Trine University has already been sealed, embodies the spirit of balance that Head Coach Lynn Moskovitz aims to instill in her team.

Moskovitz said she learned a lot in the team’s inaugural season which better prepared her for this year.

“Last year, I learned the intricacies of high school gymnastics, and I came back this year with a better strategy for the skills we practice and the routines we put together.”

Indeed, it’s this commitment to improvement and adaptability that has propelled the team to new heights.

Central to their success is the leadership of Elianna Reynolds.

“Elianna is a great captain, a great leader. She knows how to motivate her teammates when they need it most.”

Reynolds herself acknowledges the importance of teamwork and camaraderie in their pursuit of success.

“Being the team captain for this year is such an honor,” she says. “I saw the importance of connecting with everyone outside of the gym and we have made some of the best memories together. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better team this year.”

For Reynolds, the journey doesn’t end with high school. With her sights set on collegiate athletics, she eagerly anticipates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

“I’m looking forward to my classes and opportunities I’ll be able to do in the criminal justice program,” she shares. “After meeting with my professors and future coach, I knew Trine was the school for me.”

Looking back on her gymnastics journey, Reynolds is grateful that the Rocks started this team last year, bringing her back from retirement years earlier.

“I never imagined I would have an opportunity to participate in a new sport until I learned about the Acrobatics and Tumbling Team at Trine,” Reynolds said. “This will be a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what the next few years will bring!”

Beyond the individual accolades and record-breaking performances, the Westfield High School gymnastics team exemplifies the power of balance in both sport and life. Moskovitz’s emphasis on balancing school with athletics, friendships with responsibilities, has not only shaped them into formidable athletes but also well-rounded individuals. As they continue to soar to greater heights, they serve as an inspiration to aspiring gymnasts everywhere, proving that with dedication, determination, and a healthy dose of balance, anything is possible.
