Meet Weston hockey player Concord Curran

WESTON, Mass. — Concord (Coco) Curran stands as a formidable player when wielding a stick, excelling in all three of her sports: ice hockey, field hockey, and lacrosse.

In her 13-year journey in ice hockey, Coco has demonstrated her prowess in the sport. Since the 8th grade, Coco has been a starter on the Wayland-Weston (WarCats) Varsity team, contributing significantly to the team winning the 2020 DCL Small. Coco has served as team captain during her junior and senior years, been named team MVP and a DCL All-Star, and scored the most points (21) during her junior season.

Similarly, Coco has made an impact in field hockey. She started playing for the WHS Junior Varsity Field Hockey team as an 8th grader and earned a spot as a varsity starter in 9th grade, helping the team win the DCL Small in 2020 and 2023. Her accolades include team captaincy, consecutive MVP titles in her junior and senior years, recognition as a DCL All-Star and Boston Globe Player of the Week, selection to the All-League and All-Conference teams, and lead scorer three years in a row.

Adding lacrosse to her repertoire since the age of five, Coco became a varsity starter in her freshman year. While on the WHS team, she earned the “Unsung Hero” award her sophomore and junior years. She also helped her team reach the Final 4 during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Her exceptional speed on both the field and the ice, together with her honed stick skills, allow Coco to adeptly navigate past defenders to frequently score with her powerful shots. Further, Coco exemplifies what it means to be a team player, dedicated to the collective success of her teammates and the team as a whole.

Congrats, Coco!

Interview with Coco:

What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?

Coco Curran: For this season, I want to help our team make it far in the playoffs. After high school, I want to continue to play all three sports.

What do you love about your sport?

Curran: I love the ice hockey culture. From the early morning practices to the late night games to the weekend-long tournaments, my hockey teams feel like an extended family and the rink like a second home.

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

Curran: Trying to get more girls to sign up for the ice hockey team. I have encouraged others to join the team through promotional posters and group meetings.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Curran: My field hockey coach always tells the team to work extra hard right after we have scored. She reminds us that the two minutes after you score a goal are the most crucial parts of the game, because after scoring a goal, one tends to want to relax. Instead, you have to fight that urge and put in even more of an effort.

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Curran: At the tail end of a close game, I mistakenly passed the puck to the other team, and they scored. Although discouraged, I decided to focus on the present and work even harder, scoring one goal and assisting another for a 3-2 win.

Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?

Curran: Every game, I wrap my hair up clockwise in the same style bun.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Curran: I enjoy painting, drawing, and baking.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Curran: I continue to show up, work hard, and lead by example for each sport I play. I have learned that, with patience and respect for others, I am able to foster support and encouragement so each player feels valued.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Curran: Come check out a Wayland-Weston Girls Ice Hockey game this season, and then sign up to play for the WarCats next season!
