Cambridge Centaurs U10 boys travel basketball: Skills, drills and forever friendships

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario — The Cambridge Centaurs U10 boys travel basketball team certainly knows how to have fun on, and off, the court. The very first year of basketball—never mind first year playing travel—for the majority of the kids, it’s been a season packed with learning new skills, drills, and strategies, not to mention forming friendships.

The season started out strong despite having only three returning veteran players from last year’s U10 squad, with a solid 35-9 win over Oxford Attack in Woodstock. Next up was a tough loss to a strong Brantford Hawks team and then a nail biter yet another loss to Niagara—however, the boys rallied and followed it up with a win to Halton Basketball. The season has been peppered with both wins and losses, but the U10 Centaurs have had many more ups than downs. And the constant has been these young boys’ budding passion for the game of basketball—as well as their dedication to supporting and uplifting each other. The boys are always eager to give their teammates a low five between foul shots, or enthusiastically chant “D-what?! Defense!” from the bench.

Diego Abrego (age 9), one Centaurs player playing his first season of travel basketball, has been working at developing his skills, and putting those into action. He says, “I get to learn new things and then practice them in a game… I always try hard. I never give up.” Meanwhile Centaurs’ head coach, dad of three, and teacher at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School, Mark Frayne volunteered to take on the job to help nurture his son Griffin and the rest of the boys’ love for the game—now, and hopefully for a lifetime. On the 2023/2024 season, Frayne says: “I couldn’t ask for a more committed and enthusiastic group of kids. Each player has worked hard to develop their skills and they each bring a special dynamic to the team. I am very happy with how the team has progressed.”
