Meet Durango HS baseball coach Austin Anderson
DURANGO, Colo. — Baseball season is underway, and we are excited to see what’s in store for our local youth players and high school athletes. We have the pleasure of getting to know the head coach for the Durango High School baseball team, Austin Anderson.
Coach Anderson is deeply connected to the community from his time playing sports at Fort Lewis and coaching the DHS baseball team for the past two years. Playing baseball has been part of his life since he was a kid, like many of his current players, and he shares his love of the game with them. Being named an All-Conference player several times in his high school baseball career at Mountain Range High School in Westminster, CO, Coach Anderson has many experiences and lessons to invest into his team as they navigate their high school years.
After playing a baseball season at Otero Junior College, Coach Anderson transferred to Fort Lewis College and changed sports. He played four more years of football for FLC, grateful for the ability to find success as a multi-sport athlete.
Coach Anderson shares that as they continue into the season, he instills purpose into his players. He coaches them to have a purpose for everything they do and understand how the small things affect the game. Increasing their attention to detail with every opportunity is how they will be successful this season.
He shares that they will celebrate their successes, lead their players to be resilient, and learn from losses. “A disappointing loss is one of the hardest things to handle. As staff, we like to relate that to life when things don’t go your way or when things feel bad and hurtful. It’s about how you come back and carry yourself through the tough times that matter.” says Coach Anderson.
Being a coach means more to Coach Anderson than the game itself, and he values the relationships and mentorships created from it. He finds that even though coaching has changed drastically over the years, it is all about keeping a balance of open communication and trust along with strict and strong coaching. He admits this can be difficult but is always learning how to better keep a bit of the old school coaching style that has supported him integrated with the new ways of coaching young athletes today.
The DHS baseball players have had the wonderful opportunity that Coach Anderson shares his gratitude for when they started helping with Unified Basketball at the high school. “Always being mindful of the big picture and sharing their time with others is an amazing thing to see from these young men. I want to leave a legacy of memories and life advice for these players. I want them to look back and see how what they learned on the baseball field translates to life in other ways. ” he shares.
