Kearney girls track & field team excited for new season
KEARNEY, Mo. — For the defending State Champions Kearney Girls’ Track and Field team there is a sense of excitement for the 2024 season. “We have a lot of girls returning from last year and we’re trying to see how we can put this puzzle together,” Head Coach Jeff Hutton said about his team.
Coach Hutton then went on to talk about his goals for the season. He explained that every year, the goal is to try to win a conference championship, advance to districts, and then place as high as you can at the state level. Last year, this method worked very well for the girls because they were able to hoist the state trophy for the first time in school history. The girls will be without some of the talents they had last year in athletes such as Ava Lawless, Jadyn Barnes, Addy Davis, and Shelby Singleton, who all graduated in 2023. Their performances helped put last year’s team in the history books.
This year, the girls’ team will consist of a solid mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen. Seniors like Heidi Adams, Liela Murphy, Kate Martens, and Gracie Bomar are expected to be the team leaders this year. Some notable returning underclassmen include Jordin Vaughn, Caitlyn Wood, Anna Williams, Alex Kinstler, and Olivia Brock, who all helped in last year’s title run. The success from last year should have people looking out for Kearney on the track this season. The current team has the chance to do something special.
He has had many productive seasons since Coach Hutton took over the Kearney Girls Track team. He transformed the culture in his first four seasons, leading them to multiple conference titles, district titles, and state appearances. Coach Hutton has established a certain “tradition,” which is the team’s motto for the 2024 season, and has been since his tenure with the Kearney Girls’ Track and Field program. He is excited to put the pieces of his puzzle together for this year’s team and see what will make this girls’ team special.
