Liberty North track & field: On track for a great season

LIBERTY, Mo. — Liberty North track & field had an outstanding season last year under the coaching of David Chatlos and Mark Krause. The Eagles competed at the Sectional meet at Staley High School, which is the qualifying meet for the State Championship. The top four finishers in each event move on to the State Meet. North exceeded expectations and had twelve boys and eight girls qualify for the state championships. While competing in this meet, six school records were broken at the sectional meet.

In the 200-meter dash, sophomore Adelyn French placed 6th while breaking her school record along the way with a time of 25.86. In the 400-meter dash, (junior) Nevaeh Goodwin took 2nd place while also breaking her school record with a time of 58.58. Kennedy Herrig (junior) broke the school record and was the sectional champion in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.50. The girls’ 4×200 relay set a new school record with the runners Mia Couch, Adelyn French, Kylie Chester, and Kennedy Herrig; they finished 3rd with a new school record of 1:43.28. In the 4×400 meter relay, Nevaeh Goodwin, Ava Park, Reagan Herrig & Kennedy Herrig broke their school record with 4:01.34 while qualifying for the State Meet with a 3rd place finish.

The last school record broken in the previous year was in the 4×400 meter relay with the runners Xavier Horn, Colin Madison, Eric Lewczyk, and Collin Kleinhen. This was the best time in the state and the fastest public school time since 2016; they were sectional champions.

Head coach David Chatlos was asked how he plans to repeat his success last season with the talent of the senior class that graduated.

“On both the boys’ and girls’ sides, we have some great leaders stepping up where it’s needed,” says Chatlos. “There are a few in each group who are both leaders in the workouts and vocal leaders. This current senior class is one of the most driven and competitive ones we’ve had. Both groups are hungry to improve on last year.”

Coach Chatlos was also asked about some of his goals as a coach and team.
“My top goal is to create an enjoyable experience for kids where they reach their potential and learn to help the team reach its potential. I like it when we have a high turnout of athletes because we get more kids involved, and of course, it is fun to see kids winning trophies at all levels,” says Chatlos.

The last thing Coach Chatlos was asked was his expectations for his athletes.

“Give the best you have on that day, even when they don’t feel like it. Put the team first.”

Liberty North has a promising season ahead of them with all their success last year. How many school records will they break this year? Good luck LN Track & Field!
