Danville High School introduces girls flag football program in collaboration with IHSA’s new state series
DANVILLE, Ill. — Danville High School is proud to announce the launch of its Girls Flag Football program in alignment with the Illinois High School Association’ s (IHSA) recent unveiling of the Flag Football State Series. This groundbreaking initiative, revealed in a joint press conference with the Chicago Bears on February 14th, 2024, ushers in a new era of athletic opportunities for young women across the state.
The IHSA’s decision to establish a State Series for girls flag football starting in the Fall of 2024 has energized high schools throughout Illinois, including Danville High School.
At the Danville District 118 Board of Education meeting on February 21st, 2024, the unanimous support from the board marked a pivotal moment for Danville High School’s athletic program, paving the way for the introduction of girls flag football this upcoming fall.
“We are thrilled to announce the addition of girls flag football to our athletic offerings at Danville High School,” said Athletic Director Gary Gritton. “This exciting opportunity not only aligns with the IHSA’s vision for inclusivity and diversity in sports but also empowers our female students to showcase their skills, athleticism, and teamwork on the field.”
The establishment of the girls flag football program at Danville High School reflects a commitment to providing diverse and equitable opportunities for student-athletes. It represents a step forward in promoting gender equality in sports and fostering a culture of inclusivity within the school community.
“Danville High School has conducted surveys among girls in 8th through 11th grade, and we are thrilled to report that we have 70 girls who are interested in playing flag football in the fall,” added Gritton. “This overwhelming response underscores the enthusiasm and support for this new program.”
