The Newman girls ended the first day of the state tennis tournament in contention for another team trophy. The four-time reigning Division III state champion Greenies on Monday advanced one singles player and one doubles team to the semifinals of the two-day tournament that concludes Tuesday at UL Monroe. Still in the field are junior Gwendolyn Gray in the singles draw and eighth graders Frances Casbarian and Macy Montgomery in the doubles.
