Gable Steveson contacted by NFL teams since WWE release

(BVM) – There is already a connection with WWE wrestlers having a cup of coffee in the NFL like Brock Lesnar and Goldberg, but there may be another name added to that list soon.

Gable Steveson was released by the organization earlier this month and he is now potentially considering a football career.

The wrestling star was supposed to join Ariel Helwani on “The MMA Hour” on Wednesday, but his agent sent a statement to the show instead.

“Multiple NFL teams have reached out to Gable Steveson,” Helwani read. “He has also been training at Kill Cliff FC with Henri Hooft and Robbie Lawler. ”

Steveson, who stands at 6-foot-1, 265 pounds, is an Olympic gold medalist as well as a two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, given to the best college wrestler. During his time at the University of Minnesota, he flirted with the idea of playing football for head coach P.J. Fleck, but he never did.

“I’ve considered playing football,” Steveson said on the Pardon My Take podcast in 2021. “I actually talked to Coach Fleck of Gopher football and he wanted me to come out before I went to the Olympic Games to come play for a bit, but I told him after the Olympic Games I will give him an official decision.

Despite never suiting up in college, NFL teams are interested in perhaps giving the star wrestler a shot.

Steveson’s size and athleticism could maybe have him viewed as a potential edge rusher, but his strength could also allow him to handle an interior-line role.

Will Steveson ever be a starter at the highest level of football? Probably not. But maybe the 23-year-old could make it in the league as a depth player if he decides to go that route. NFL mandatory minicamps start in June, so he will likely have to make a decision soon.
