Angel Reese becomes a sports owner in DC soccer club
WASHINGTON D.C. (BVM) –Angel Reese is only 22 years old, yet she is now an owner of a sports franchise.
It was announced Tuesday that the WNBA star has purchased an ownership stake in DC Power Football Club in the USL. Reese is a Randallstown, Maryland, native, which is about a half-hour drive to Charm City.
“I want to help grow women’s sports and elevate female athletes across the board,” Reese said in a club statement. “We’re taking over, and I’m honored to be able to support Power FC and invest in women’s soccer in the DMV community.”
Despite low wages for rookies in the WNBA, the Chicago Sky star took advantage of NIL opportunities throughout her time at LSU with deals with companies such as Reebok and Beats by Dre.
Reese is a new, popular figure in the growing WNBA, but she will also now attempt to grow the new soccer league.
“Angel’s decision to be a founding investor alongside us in Power FC is groundbreaking,” Jason Levien, club CEO and Co-Chairman said. “As a Maryland native, Angel is so passionate about being a catalyst for positive change in women’s sports in the DMV as well as globally while inspiring the next generation of female athletes. We’re looking forward to her partnership in the boardroom as an equity partner.”
The team will kick off their inaugural season this August as the USL debuts with eight teams across the country. Women’s soccer has grown exponentially from a pro standpoint as the USL will be the second major women’s sports league alongside the NWSL.
The 2024 WNBA draft class has been viewed as a generational one with Reese, Caitlin Clark and Cameron Brink due to their basketball abilities, but the league’s new stars are already having a large impact on women’s sports as a whole despite their short amount of time as professionals.
