Ranking the top 10 MLB players from the state of Tennessee
10. Jim Gilliam, 2B/3B/LF
As a major league newcomer in 1953, Gilliam had the most plate appearances in the National League (710). He continued to have at least 600 plate appearances in nine of the following 10 go-rounds.
The career Dodger — he moved with the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles — hit more triples than anyone else that 1953 season, winning the NL’s Rookie of the Year. Gilliam, a Nashville native, was also twice an All-Star and won four World Series with the Boys in Blue.
