Bellbrook HS tennis aims for players to ace life skills
BELLBROOK, Ohio — I started playing tennis when I was 9 years old and instantly fell in love with the sport. The reasons were very simple: making friends, having a great time, playing anywhere and improving day by day. An American citizen born in Venezuela, I spent much of my life there and in Puerto Rico, before moving to the United States. I discovered that no matter where you go, you will always find a tennis court. Everywhere I played, I made friends, who remain very close to this day.
After my kids grew up, I decided to be a tennis coach—the best decision that I have made in my life! I just completed eight years as a tennis coach. Coaching lets me share my experience as a tennis player: giving strategy, tips and good ideas.
I’ve found that the most important thing is to respect each player. All of them are different, and they learn in different ways. They always have important questions and must be taught individually. This keeps them happy in tennis practices and matches; and if they are happy, I also feel happy. This is what fills me and drives me to move forward every day.
The sport of tennis gives you skills that can be applied beyond the court—in jobs, projects, meetings and elsewhere. Tennis helps players develop confidence, trust in themselves, the ability to strategize, and knowledge of both how to lose and how to win. This is all a part of our lives.
For all of these reasons, I love to coach tennis. I know I am part of something that makes a difference in people’s lives. After my players graduate from Bellbrook High School, I’m sure they will take with them what they learned from this team. It is a unique and unforgettable experience.
