Zach Root enters transfer portal: 5 possible landing spots

GREENVILLE, N.C. (BVM) – East Carolina pitcher Zach Root was a prized recruit coming out of Fort Myers High School, but he wound up landing in Greenville, North Carolina, rather than in the minor leagues. The Pirates were thrilled to land the southpaw and he turned into a major piece for them in 2024.

Root had a 3.82 ERA this season along with 69 strikeouts in 63 ⅔ innings. Following East Carolina’s surprising elimination in the regional round of the NCAA Tournament, Root announced his decision to enter the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-1 lefty should be able to slot into most weekend rotations in 2025 as he looks to be an early-round draft pick next year.

These are the schools that may pursue Root.
