Hardwood success highlights the Christiansburg Blue Demons

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — After a successful slate of fall sports opened the school year, we have quickly zoomed through the holidays and into the spring semester. In that time, we have witnessed a strong start for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at Christiansburg High School.

Recent history would suggest that success for both programs has become the norm in the last decade or so. Highlighted by a state championship in 2012, postseason success for the boys has grown increasingly common. The same can be said for the girls as they routinely find themselves in district and region title contention come playoff time.

While the accolades may tally up differently or be obtained in different ways, it is rather interesting to recognize the similarities that both squads have shown this season. Both squads opened their respective seasons with a victory. Both teams won their first road game. Both squads are currently en route to surpassing the progress and win totals that they tallied during all of last season.

Despite sharing a multitude of similarities, the two teams are finding success through vastly different paths as well. Second-year head coach Kevin Cox has seen quite a bit of growth and an increase in success with his guys, specifically behind the on-court leadership of Kaleb Robinson.

The squad opened the season with an impressive 93-point outing in a win over Liberty. Christiansburg’s season to this point has been highlighted by a win against Blacksburg on its home floor followed up by a victory over Pulaski in the Chance Harman Classic less than 24 hours later. After the team picked up two wins last season, the Blue Demons have now already doubled their win total from last year with still half the season left to play.

The girls have gotten off to a successful start as well, including a piping hot opening to their schedule. They won their first six contests and have posted eight total wins thus far. Head coach Jacob Underwood leads his squad behind the consistent play of both Katy Hoover and Blythe Akers.

Underwood’s squad hasn’t just won a lot this season, they have dominated. Five of their eight wins have come by double digits. After they tallied 13 wins last season, the girls are well on their way to eclipsing that mark this season. At this point in their campaign, the team already has a higher winning percentage than they had last year.

Hoops at Christiansburg has been fun to watch this season. Blue and gold basketball is in good hands.
