Durango area’s Savilia Blunk: A rising star in cross-country mountain biking

DURANGO, Colo. — Savilia Blunk, a name synonymous with dedication and excellence in cross-country mountain biking, has made significant strides in her sport. At 25, she is an eight-time national cross-country champion and a rising force on the international scene.

Growing up in Inverness, California, Savilia’s athletic journey began with sailing, soccer, and horseback riding before mountain biking captivated her. Competing for Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, she honed her skills and built a foundation for her future successes.

Blunk’s career is marked by notable achievements, including winning the cross-country short track title in 2023 and finishing 8th and 10th in the cross-country short track and Olympic cross-country races at the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. As of 2024, she holds seven elite UCI Mountain Bike World Cup podiums.

For Savilia, mountain biking is about achieving peak physical and mental performance. “The process of this is motivating to keep doing the work and seeing what’s possible,” she explains. Her goals extend beyond competition; she hopes to inspire others to embrace biking and outdoor exercise.

Living a nomadic lifestyle, with most of her season in Europe and over 250 days on the road, is a significant challenge. Blunk has learned to balance this by establishing bases in Europe and the US, managing the constant movement and time away from her fiancé and family.

Inspired by her teammate Lea Davison’s advice, “Happiness is fast,” Savilia focuses on building a joyful environment. Her pre-race routine includes inward reflection, breathwork, and mindfulness. Outside biking, Savilia enjoys the outdoors through backpacking, camping, and picnics. She loves cooking and developing new recipes, finding balance and relaxation away from the competitive intensity.
