Q&A with Weston lacrosse player Emilio Tanzi

WESTON, Mass. — Emilio Tanzi (18) has played lacrosse since 1st grade, starting with the Weston Youth Lacrosse program. It was during his sophomore year that Emilio’s commitment to the sport intensified, fueled by his desire to pursue collegiate-level play. With his plan to play lacrosse at Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut for a post-graduate year, Emilio’s goal to play college lacrosse is well within reach.

From his time with the Boston Freight Train Lacrosse Club to his tenure on the Weston High School Varsity (WHS) Lacrosse team, Emilio has honed his lacrosse skills. His prowess as one of the WHS team’s top scorers, coupled with a formidable outside shot, has earned him numerous accolades, including the Lacrosse McCrea William Award (2023), the DCL All-Star Award (2023), and a co-captaincy this current season.

In 2023, he was recognized with the Offensive MVP Award and became a DCL All-Star Honorable Mention and co-captain of the varsity team. Furthermore, Emilio was selected to participate in the 46th Shriners Football Classic.

Congrats, Emilio!

Interview with Emilio:

What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?

Emilio Tanzi: I hope to play college lacrosse at a high level.

What do you love about your sport?

Tanzi: I love our team culture at Weston and winning with them and my club team. Lacrosse is an amazing team sport at any age.

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

Tanzi: My biggest challenge is staying confident during games, but I constantly remind myself of all of the practice and time that I have put into managing this challenge.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Tanzi: Early on in high school, someone shared with me Wayne Gretsky’s famous quote, ‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’ Not only does this apply to sports, but also to school and life in general.

Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?

Tanzi: I hit the wall 100 times with each hand before a game. I also listen to hype-up music.

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Tanzi: A mistake I made early on was not getting my shots off fast enough, but I fixed this by watching college lacrosse and working with a trainer.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Tanzi: Hang out with friends and weightlift.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Tanzi: It is important to have team chemistry, and the coach and captains have a lot to do with building it.
