Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy baseball coach Tony Schulz doubles up on century mark for career wins

CINCINNATI — In a high school baseball season that typically lasts about 25 games, if that many, milestone victories take on added significance. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy baseball coach Tony Schulz reached one such milestone during the 2024 season – his 200th career victory, achieved over 11 seasons – three at his alma mater, Fairfield High School, and the last eight at CHCA.

Schulz, 42, lives in Liberty Township with his wife of 20 years, Ruthie, son Luke, 11, and daughter J.J., 10. Before becoming a head coach, he was an assistant at Fairfield for one year and Middletown High School for four years, and junior varsity head coach for one year at Morristown East High School in Tennessee.

The Georgetown College graduate and three-year varsity letter-winner, answered questions about his career:

What does winning 200 games mean to you?

Tony Schulz: It means that I have been around a while and am getting old. But it really means that I have had some amazing players come through the CHCA and Fairfield programs. And I have also been surrounded by some really high-level assistant coaches.

What have been some of the highlights of your coaching career?

Schulz: From a baseball perspective winning state in 2021 with CHCA and winning the Greater Miami Conference with Fairfield in 2016 were moments I am really proud of. But mostly, it’s the connection made with players and coaches that will last a lifetime.

Which games/moments most stand out?

Schulz: Not sure there are particular games that stand out. Every game is special in some way. But the one I will never forget is my first season at CHCA when Griffan Smith threw a perfect game in the postseason while his father was fighting for his life in the hospital. That one was special.

Why did you get into coaching?

Schulz: I love the game. When it’s played the right way, it’s the most beautiful thing. I love the relationships you build with people who have a common bond.

Tell us about the 2024 CHCA team (the Eagles were 17-6 overall). What were the team’s strengths?

Schulz: The 2024 CHCA team was a really fun season with some amazing moments and games. We ultimately did not advance as deep in the postseason as we thought we could or would, but it will always be a special group to me.

Who were some of your top players and what did they contribute toward team success?

Schulz: The seniors, Jasper Daniels, Jeffrey Levin (Miami Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year), Brandon McConnell, Andrew Moffitt and Zach O’Connell were amazing leaders. Much of our success in 2024 is attributed to them.
