Centerville HS girls golf on the upswing
DAYTON, Ohio — After the Centerville High School (CHS) girls’ varsity gold golf team won the state title in 2022, we lost five of our top six players. Last year was a big learning curve for players who had not had the opportunity to compete on our most competitive team.
We bring back seven of our top eight 2023-24 players this fall, including seniors Ava Bressler and Nithya Nunna; so we will be much more experienced.
Brigid Nickell (spotlighted in the Jul. 2024 issue of South CW Neighbors) has been in our golf program since she was 9 years old. I have watched her grow up. When she was a 6th grader, she bought a Centerville team golf bag, so the Incarnation Catholic School team that she played on would know she was going to CHS. As a sophomore she was on our 2022 state championship team. Since she is also in my advisory at CHS, we spend a great of time together.
We have an overall expectation that our top players will take lessons from a PGA pro and play in spring and summer tournaments. We also expect players to stay on top of their grades and classes, since we miss several days of school for tournaments during golf season. In addition, we emphasize sportsmanship and following the rules of golf.
CHS is playing in several elite tournaments in Cincinnati, Columbus, Toledo and Akron. In all we will be in at least 15-16 tournaments and a few nine-hole matches. We are hoping to get back to the state tournament.
As a golf coach, I really get to know players and parents on opposing teams very well. I enjoy the camaraderie among the teams that we play on a regular basis: Dublin Jerome, New Albany, Springboro, Ursuline, etc. In the end, having dedicated players makes each season fun and exciting.
