Wesco Jr. holds the top speed in college football so far for the 2024 season, per Reel Analytics. Trailing behind him are Penn State’s Nick Singleton (21.8 mph) and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith (21.7 mph).
Wesco Jr.’s top speed is also faster than any NFL player through Week 1 of the 2024 season.
Data compiled by Next Generation Stats shows that the fastest speed recorded by an NFL ball carrier this season tops at 21.89 mph – which Houston Texans WR Nico Collins recorded in Week 1 on a 55-yard reception. Notably, Tyreek Hill’s fastest top speed so far in 2024 is 20.27 mph.
Wesco Jr.’s speedy touchdown was accomplished on his first collegiate start. It was also Clemson’s first touchdown of the season and is the longest by a Clemson freshman since Tee Higgins’ 78-yard score in 2017.
“I just ran, ran my route,” Wesco Jr. told the media. “Cade just made a great throw to me. So I just did my job and caught it and just kept running. It was deafening whenever I caught that ball and ran. Couldn’t hear anything. Couldn’t hear my own thoughts really. Fans were crazy. It was probably one of the best experiences of my life.”
Notably, Wesco Jr. is a four-star recruit from Texas. He recorded 109 receptions for 1,903 yards and 29 touchdowns during his career at Midlothian High School.
Overall, it appears that the Clemson Tigers have found their next star receiver. In the first two weeks of the 2024 season, Wesco Jr. recorded four receptions for 135 receiving yards and one unforgettable touchdown.
