London area pro wrestler Scott Henry enjoys villainous alter-ego, “Scot Free”

LONDON, Ontario — “Watching wrestling for years, I always gravitated to the bad guys,” says Scott Henry, a local pro wrestler whose own character, “Scot Free”, mainly performs as a villain. The real Scott admits to enjoying the adrenaline rush during his performances. His character is rude and arrogant, with a penchant for cheating and getting away…well… “Scot Free”! In the ring, his unapologetic alter-ego is egged on by a loud, riled and booing audience—all part of the entertainment delivered by this sport.

Scott came into wrestling later in life. After a single lesson, he knew he wanted to continue and enrolled in private lessons. He also assisted his trainer in setting up the ring for matches where he watched promoters in action. Once his trainer deemed him ready, he put the word out. Scot describes the promoters he has worked with as “storytellers”. “They may suggest a character, or work with a wrestler to create their character,” he says, but listening to fans in the audience, it’s clear that the wrestlers deliver the attitude and flair needed to bring their characters to life.

Today, after his day job and on weekends, Scott trains and works out a lot at his gym to help prepare for the extreme cardio of each performance. “Getting there and keeping that cardio level is always a challenge, especially as you get older,” the 43-year-old wrestler says, grimacing. (He is currently mending a dislocated ankle.) So why subject his body to such abuse? He loves it. The fans, the company and camaraderie keep him coming back. “Hammerlock, especially, has been very welcoming.” He is talking about London’s Hammerlock Pure Wrestling company. Even out of the ring, they work together as a team. “Setting up for each event takes a whole bunch of people,” says Scott, explaining how everyone pitches in to get it done. Whether performing solo, as part of a tag team, or even in a trio, “Scot Free” looks forward to his next appearance and a chance to get his opponent on the ropes!

The Hammerlock Pure Wrestling gang will deliver fun for the whole family at a “country and western” themed event on October 19th, at the Doubletree by Hilton in downtown London, as they help raise funds in support of a local charity, Internet Sense First.
