Cheers to 34 seasons: The spirit of Sequoyah Chiefs Sideline Cheer
CANTON, Ga. —
Coaches: Ashlyn Grummer, Cassie Pichon, and Michelle Giles
The legacy of Sequoyah Sideline Cheer began in 1990, with the opening of Sequoyah High School, and we are excited to celebrate our 34th season in 2024. Over the years, countless athletes have contributed to building a program rooted in tradition, excellence, and school pride. We honor the hard work and spirit of the teams that came before us, and it is their dedication that inspires us to keep this legacy alive.
As “Sequoyah’s Sweethearts,” we take immense pride in leading the crowd every Friday night, bringing the energy and enthusiasm that makes The Flat electric. Whether it’s cheering on the sidelines, firing up the fans, or showing unwavering support for the best football team in Cherokee County, we represent the heart of Sequoyah with passion and pride! Here’s to continuing the tradition and making new memories this season.

What are the team’s goals for the current/upcoming season?
Ashlyn Grummer: One of our primary goals this season is to expand our volunteer and community outreach efforts, ensuring that all 50 of our sideline cheerleaders have meaningful opportunities to give back. We want to deepen our connection with the community by participating in more service projects and local initiatives, reinforcing the value of teamwork and leadership both on and off the field.
Who are the team’s leaders? What makes them a vital part of the team’s success?
Grummer: We are incredibly fortunate to have 17 seniors serving on our leadership committee this year. These amazing athletes lead with integrity and grace, setting an outstanding example for the rest of the team. Their dedication and leadership make us so proud and lucky to have them guiding us through this season!
Does the team have any pregame rituals or traditions?
Grummer: Yes, we have several cherished traditions that bring us together as a team. Every Friday, we share a pregame meal, generously provided by the Chapman Family, which sets the tone for game night. One of our favorite traditions is “High Five Friday,” where our cheerleaders volunteer at our zone elementary schools to spread school spirit and connect with younger students.

We look forward to a variety of annual events that have become beloved traditions for our team. From CYFA Night and themed Friday nights to the senior back-to-school breakfast, these moments create lasting memories. Boot Camp, UCA Camp, and our Sideline Kickoff Dinner also play an essential role in building team spirit and camaraderie. And, of course, we can’t forget our hype videos, which get everyone excited for the season ahead! These traditions are the heart of our team, helping to strengthen our unity and pride throughout the year.
How does the team welcome new members?
Grummer: We love welcoming our freshmen and new members to the team with excitement and special traditions! One of the highlights is our Big and Little Reveal, where each new member is paired with a veteran cheerleader to guide and support them throughout the season. We also host a fun pool party, team lunch, and plenty of surprises during our summer Boot Camp. These events create a strong sense of belonging and help our new members feel like part of the Sequoyah Cheer family from day one!
How does the team celebrate?
Grummer: After a win on Thursday and Friday nights, we celebrate by joining our football team on the field, sharing in the excitement and energy of the victory! One of our favorite traditions is being included in the post-game huddle, thanks to the football coaches who make us feel like a true part of the team. It’s an incredible way to unite and celebrate as one Sequoyah family!

Has the team (or any individuals) broken any records this year?
Grummer: This year at UCA camp, we proudly had seven girls named All Americans: Peyton Grummer, Anna Stokes, Sydney Willyard, Carly Nagorny, Ellie Morris, Addison Hall, and Pepper Nash. Additionally, several of our athletes were recognized as Pin It Forward recipients for their exceptional leadership, teamwork, and kindness: Emma Turman, Averi Gravitt, Destinee Hidelang, Sydney Willyard, Sydney Chapman, and Addison Hall. We also celebrated Lauren Budde and Addison Hall as the Camp Jump Off Champions for both Varsity and JV.
What has motivated the team to reach their goals this season?
Grummer: Our girls absolutely love Thursdays and Fridays in the Flat! The energy and momentum from the football game are incredibly motivating. One of our favorite traditions is doing the “Chiefs Scored” tuck line every time the Chiefs score, which really pumps up the crowd. We thrive on interacting with the student section, the band, and our Hickory Flat Friends and Family. There’s nothing better than a large, enthusiastic crowd cheering alongside us—it’s truly the BEST!
