Estancia football shows heart and hustle
COSTA MESA, Calif. — With 18 seasons under his belt, Estancia High School Football Head Coach Mike Bargas believes this year has been one of the most memorable. “This has been one of the most gratifying seasons for us because the team has shown consistent growth and development each week. This group of local neighborhood kids has stayed committed to their school, forming a strong and united Estancia Football squad,” Bargas shared.

At the time of this writing, Estancia’s “boys of fall” finished second in the Sigma League with a 4-1 record, and an impressive 8-2 overall record. Despite setbacks from key injuries and challenges at certain positions, the team has rallied beautifully. Coach Bargas credits the boys’ strong bonds and relationships as the foundation of their success. “The tough times have only strengthened their perseverance and resolve.”
Heading into the CIF playoffs with the championship as their ultimate goal, the team’s camaraderie and shared values keep them focused and resilient.

Team captains Joseth Groth and Roland Bennett lead with both energy and example, demonstrating hard work and commitment. Through their positive attitudes and engagement, they motivate their teammates both on and off the field. “These two are the glue of the team, acting as a conduit between coaches and players. Their leadership helps the team run smoothly,” said Coach Bargas.
“Joseth Groth is a perfect example of big things coming in small packages,” remarked Bargas. A three-year starter, Joseth has made a significant impact on the field despite not being the biggest or most intimidating player. His ambitions match his determination; he hopes to attend Stanford after graduation.

Game days follow a distinct tradition: the players gather for a pre-game meal at 2:45 PM, wearing shirts, ties, and jackets, sitting together in silence as they mentally prepare for the game. Post-game, they meet at In-N-Out to review their performance, discussing what went well and where they can improve. “It’s a great opportunity for the older players to guide the new ones, teaching them not only the work required but also how to stay humble at the same time,” Bargas explained. “Having tight-knit bonds among players and coaches keeps our atmosphere positive and moving forward.”
“The players know that respect is earned, not given,” concluded Coach Bargas. No matter how this team completes this remarkable season – hopefully with a deep run at the CIF Championship – they have earned the respect and pride of their school and community, serving as a shining example of teamwork and perseverance.
